Therapeutic Recreation at Gio’s Garden?

July 17, 2012 by geof@giosgarden.org

Therapeutic Recreation (or recreation therapy) is using recreational and other activities as treatment interventions to improve functional living skills by focusing on physical, emotional, cognitive, and social developmental areas.

Amelia & Chelsea are having a “picnic” to practice functional play with plastic food.

As a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, I am able to look at the needs of each child and create activities to meet those needs. I meet with each family before the child starts at Gio’s Garden. During this meeting, we discuss what each child is working on at home and in other therapies and where more support is needed. Together, we create goals that your child may work on while they are at Gio’s Garden.

We are here to help families throughout your week. Some families would like extra assistance at meal times because the feeding routine is very extensive. Other families want their child to work on functional play with objects and socialization with other children. Some families want their child to focus on gross motor skills and work on sitting up on their own or walking with assistance. Gio’s Garden looks at each individual child and creates activities to continue progress on their goals, all while playing and having fun.
